Michael Chandler has been fixated on securing a fight with Conor McGregor ever since they coached on The Ultimate Fighter 31 in 2023. Their planned showdown at UFC 303 fell apart when McGregor pulled out with an injury, extending Chandler's frustrating wait for what he considers unfinished business. The former Bellator champion has remained in fighting shape specifically for this potential matchup, believing their TUF season created an obligation that still needs settling.
While McGregor's repeated delays have made the fight seem increasingly unlikely, Chandler moved forward with other opportunities, losing his last two fights since their encounter on the show. The McGregor bout remains the one that got away, a lingering what-if scenario in both fighters' careers. But there may be one shot left.
Conor McGregor has once again captured the attention of MMA fans by calling out Chandler in a blunt social media post.
The former two-division UFC champion, who hasn’t fought since breaking his leg against Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in 2021, took to X (formerly Twitter) to reignite the feud, writing: "IRON MIKE CHANDLER. Unfinished business."
He followed up with another post saying, “I’ll only come back to a stadium.”
The posts sent shockwaves through the combat sports community, as McGregor has recently shied away from announcing legitimate desire of a comeback—until now. His latest challenge suggests he’s serious about settling the score with Chandler, whom he was originally slated to fight in 2024 before withdrawing due to a toe injury.
Chandler, never one to back down from a verbal spar, fired back within hours, posting "Unfinished business loading…" alongside a throwback photo from their Ultimate Fighter season and made a separate post with the image of a plane taking off—a possible hint at fight negotiations.
Fans have doubted McGregor will ever return to the UFC due to his recent pivot toward Irish politics and hinting at retirement. McGregor’s recent post, however, suggests he’s still angling for a marquee fight against Chandler.
Meanwhile, Chandler has remained adamant that their fight must happen, even as fans grew skeptical after years of delays.
"He knows his road back to the UFC goes through me," Chandler said in a recent interview with MMA personality The Schmo, emphasizing that their contractual obligations from TUF remain unresolved.
The UFC’s role in this saga remains unclear. With McGregor absent from the testing pool, it seems that a fight booking has not yet been targeted by the organization’s brass.
A McGregor-Chandler bout, even years past its prime, would guarantee massive pay-per-view numbers. Chandler, despite his recent skid (1-5 in his last six fights), remains one of the division’s most marketable stars, while McGregor’s drawing power is unmatched.
Fans are divided. Some see McGregor’s callout as another empty promise, given his history of flip-flopping on retirements and comebacks.
The ball is now in the UFC’s court. Whether this feud culminates in the Octagon or fizzles out like so many McGregor rumors, it’s already proven that "The Notorious" still commands the spotlight—even from the sidelines.
