Ronda Rousey may have two fights on her hands in May 16 return

Ronda Rousey could be facing more than one women’s MMA trailblazer come May 16.

This week brought a surprise for the combat sports world, with news breaking that Rousey and Gina Carano will finally meet in an MMA bout, over ten years after their proposed UFC matchup fell through.

While Carano never made it to the UFC and left Strikeforce before its featherweight title was formed, many still see her as a key figure in raising the profile of women’s MMA.

Carano’s last appearance in the cage was a defeat to Cyborg nearly 17 years ago, and while Cyborg never faced Rousey, she has repeatedly said that the former UFC champion avoided fighting her.

Now holding the PFL women’s featherweight belt, it’s no surprise where her support will lie when Carano steps back into competition.

Cyborg isn’t just supporting from afar. She’s open to playing an active role in Carano’s preparation, eager to help tip the scales in her favour.

“I would rather help @ginacarano prepare for her comeback if I can than compete against her,” Cyborg posted on X.

How Netflix’s move into MMA might shake up the sport

It’s been a rocky start to 2026 for the UFC. Complaints about watered-down cards have only grown louder, and so far, the new Paramount era hasn’t done much to change that narrative.

The only undisputed title fight in the opening quarter was the controversial rematch between Alexander Volkanovski and Diego Lopes, leaving fans wanting more from what’s supposed to be the sport’s biggest stage.

Early cards this year have felt uneven, partly because of the focus on stacking title fights at the White House. It hasn’t helped fan sentiment, which continues to sour in some corners of the MMA community.

The UFC has long benefited from a lack of real competition. But with Netflix now stepping into MMA, that could be about to change.

Many are predicting Rousey vs Carano will attract more viewers than any UFC event this year. And with big names like Francis Ngannou potentially joining future cards, Netflix might soon become a major player in MMA.
