Dana White has addressed the quick stoppage that stirred up controversy at UFC Nashville.

White was cageside as Derrick Lewis secured a knockout against Tallison Teixeira in just 35 seconds on Saturday night.

However, many in the fight world strongly disagree with the outcome, arguing that referee Jason Herzog stopped the bout too early.

Teixeira had been dropped by Lewis, but was back on his feet when the referee stepped in to halt the fight. Many fans believed he should have been given a chance to recover, with Herzog receiving criticism for ending the bout so quickly.

Dana White breaks silence on ‘fast’ UFC Nashville stoppage

Speaking to the media after the event, Dana White addressed Derrick Lewis’ record-setting 16th KO win in the UFC.

While he expected Lewis to finish the fight quickly, White felt it was stopped a bit too soon and should have been allowed to go on a little longer.

“We kind of figured that fight would go like that,” White said. “It delivered. It was what we expected. It was what everyone expected. Nobody expected a five-round fight.

“A fight can turn with one punch. Whoever lands that big shot, and they were both trying to land it, and he got him.

“I thought the stoppage was a little fast, but you know, it is what it is.”

Former UFC champion backs referee after early finish

Daniel Cormier, who was calling the fights on Saturday night, stood by both Lewis’ win and Herzog’s decision during the UFC Nashville broadcast.

“That was unbelievable,” he said.

“People saying there was a bad stoppage… Teixeira grabbed the cage to pull himself up.

“Referee needs to take a point. He can’t stop the finish to take the point, so you stop the fight.”
