Dana White overlooks Georges St-Pierre in surprising pick for best UFC welterweight ever

Dana White is likely to stir up some debate with his latest call on who he thinks is the greatest welterweight of all time.

White has always had a complicated relationship with the UFC’s rankings. Before Jon Jones retired, he pushed hard for him to be recognised as the top pound-for-pound fighter in the sport.

Following that, the UFC boss argued that Islam Makhachev should take over that spot after Makhachev’s final lightweight title defence. Around that time, he also mentioned plans to involve Meta in future ranking decisions.

But when it comes to his pick for the greatest welterweight in UFC history, White went with a name most fans would not have expected.

White and George St-Pierre’s relationship has always been more businesslike than personal, so the UFC president’s choice is not likely to surprise many who have followed their history.

White, confirming St-Pierre’s return to action, was left with egg on his face when he was later forced to backtrack on a matchup he had claimed was a done deal.

Now, in a move that might fuel even more debate among fans, the businessman is standing by his belief that Kamaru Usman is the greatest welterweight ever. He did not hold back when sharing his thoughts on the Pound-4-Pound podcast.

He said to Usman: “You heard all the things that I said about you with your ‘30%’ comment, and now I’m sitting here today, and I’ll f—— — whoever wants to debate it with me, that you’re the greatest welterweight of all-time.”

Kamaru Usman’s welterweight legacy

Returning to the octagon, Usman has a specific list of fighters he wants to face as he looks to make one more run at the title.

The Nigerian star is focused on reclaiming the welterweight title, a belt he held for three years, and will be watching closely when UFC 322 kicks off next weekend.

Usman won the belt from Tyron Woodley and went on to defend it twice each against Jorge Masvidal and Colby Covington, along with a knockout victory over Gilbert Burns.
