On this day in 2015, Dana White admitted that he was wrong after turning a fighter down.
Beating Tim Sylvia at UFC 68 remains the win that Randy Couture cherishes the most of all of his iconic victories.
This remarkable achievement saw him set the record as the oldest UFC champion ever, winning the heavyweight title at a staggering 45 years old.
Stephen Thompson has spoken about surpassing Couture in the past by fighting past the age of 47 as the oldest fighter on the current roster at 42.
That being said, it’s incredibly rare to see fighters compete at a high level around this age, which is why White was reluctant at first to offer one specific athlete an opportunity.
Jon Jones closed out UFC 182 by beating Daniel Cormier to defend his light heavyweight title with arguably his most impressive win.
While the Octagon’s arrival at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on January 3 of 2015 featured veterans like Donald Cerrone, it also saw several new names make their debuts.
Jared Cannonier’s first UFC bout didn’t go to plan, though it was a much more successful night for a fighter who was initially turned down by Dana White.
Marion Reneau started training in her 30s to pursue better financial opportunities after living paycheck to paycheck as a teacher to support her and her son.
On her UFC debut at 37 years old, Reneau defeated Alexis Dufresne by unanimous decision, though this doesn’t do her dominance justice, with the scorecards reading 30-26, 30-26, and 30-25.
When Dana White was asked about her performance, he admitted that he’d previously denied her a spot on season 18 of ‘The Ultimate Fighter’, which featured new additions like Julianna Pena and Raquel Pennington.
“She looked awesome and I have to publicly apologize to her,” White said. “She tried out for The Ultimate Fighter and I told her she was too old so I was wrong again.”
“Too old, whatever… I earned my spot here,” Reneau responded. “I did what it took for me to get to this point and I don’t think age is a factor, especially with me. I’ve been an athlete all my life, it’s never been a struggle for me.”
Despite arriving in the UFC at a late stage, Marion Reneau went on to compete a total of 13 times inside the Octagon.
‘The Belizean Bruiser’ competed against the likes of former UFC champions Jessica Andrade, Holly Holm, and Miesha Tate in this time.
In 2021, Reneau announced her retirement inside the Octagon following a loss to Tate.
“I did give it all I had and that’s what’s left for me,” she concluded. “So, I’m saying goodbye. I’m going to cheer everyone else on in the bantamweight division.”
Having walked away at 44 years old, she remains the oldest female fighter to have competed inside the Octagon.
