Jon Jones regrets how things unfolded before his retirement.

Before the prospect of competing at the White House quickly reversed his decision, Jones’ controversial retirement was announced by Dana White following a frustrating period of uncertainty in the UFC heavyweight division.

As champion, the GOAT contender refused to unify the titles against Tom Aspinall, who held the interim gold at the time after being crowned during Jones’ injury absence.

When the title was vacated and Aspinall was elevated to undisputed status, White accused Jones of going back on his word during discussions about a fight against the Englishman.

A few months on, an apologetic Jones appeared to admit fault in the heavyweight title saga.

Dana White accepts Jon Jones’ apology but says it was not necessary

Jones’ apology to White came as he attempts to mend bridges and ensure his 2026 comeback is possible.

The Rochester native recently got a positive response from the UFC president, who insisted there is no need for Jones to be sorry about anything despite a number of clashes between the pair in the past.

“Absolutely,” White said when asked if he accepts Jones’ apology during an interview with TMZ Sports.

“Listen, he doesn’t need to apologize to me for anything. You know, even through all the bad stuff that Jon and I have gone through, I still say that Jon Jones is the greatest of all time, because it is a fact!

“Everybody starts laughing when I say it,” he continued. “Jon Jones is the greatest of all time, period, end of story. I know it and everybody else knows it.

“There’s nothing for Jon to apologize about. Dealing with Jon over the last however many years has been a unique experience, I can tell you that. But it doesn’t change the fact he’s the best-ever.”

Jon Jones could be back in the running for the UFC White House event

White’s reaction to the apology could further ignite Jones’ hopes of making a comeback at a grand event in 2026.

The former heavyweight and light heavyweight champion has been the most vocal about securing a place on the card ever since United States President Donald Trump announced UFC fights at the White House as part of the celebrations for 250 years of American independence.

White initially firmly rejected Jones’ pleas to fight at the event in Washington D.C. on June 14 owing to a history of unreliability.

‘Bones’ has continued pushing for a super-fight with Alex Pereira at the White House, and he may take the UFC president’s recent comments as a sign that hope is not all lost.
