The UFC White House card got a late addition during Saturday’s event in Miami.
Josh Hokit, fresh off his wild win over Curtis Blaydes at UFC 327, was quickly matched up for another fight.
Hokit is now set to face Derrick Lewis as the seventh bout added to the June 14 card. That matchup came together after President Donald Trump, who attended the event, questioned why “The Black Beast” wasn’t already involved.
According to UFC president Dana White, only Trump now holds the power to make further additions to the lineup in Washington D.C.
When the full UFC White House lineup was announced in March, reactions were mixed. Many fans felt underwhelmed by the six-fight card and the absence of major names like Conor McGregor and Jon Jones.
Bringing in a heavyweight bout between Hokit, who has been gaining attention, and Derrick Lewis, the UFC’s all-time knockout leader, has helped improve the card’s appeal for some fans.
While there are still plenty of names fans would like to see added, Dana White has made it clear that only one person can make that call.
“Other than that fight, is there any chance that anymore fights can be added? No, I shouldn’t have done this one,” White said at his UFC 327 press conference.
“When the president looks at you and says, ‘Why is Derrick Lewis not on the card?’ You put Derrick Lewis on the card immediately.
“Unless he (Trump) calls me and tells me to do something else, there will be no more fights added to the card.
“I certainly hope (there aren’t more fighters he wants at the White House). But anything is possible”.
If Hokit manages to get past Lewis, he may set his sights on an interim heavyweight title fight between Pereira and Ciryl Gane in Washington DC on June 14th. That could potentially cement his place as a top contender.
