Daniel Cormier hopes Jon Jones is not expecting his demand to be taken seriously.
The latest period of hostility between Jones and Dana White was sparked by the UFC president’s press conference comments last Saturday.
After the UFC White House card was unveiled during the UFC 326 broadcast, White was asked about the absence of Jones by reporters. His claim that the former UFC champion had been lying about negotiations did not go down well and resulted in Jones publicly requesting his release.
Days before the UFC White House card was revealed, Jones got fans hopeful about his potential fight with Alex Pereira taking place on June 14 when he revealed that talks were taking place with the promotion.
White rejected that, despite a later report insisting Jones was “100% right” about the negotiations having taken place.
The Rochester native did not take kindly to being branded a liar and hit back in a string of deleted X posts. Among them was Jones’ request to be released by the UFC.
But his arch-rival says there is absolutely no chance of that wish being granted given what could be waiting for Jones away from the Octagon.
“He is not getting released,” Cormier said on his Funky and the Champ show alongside Ben Askren. “I think it is zero percent (chance) he gets released.
“There is no way you can release Jones because then if Jones and Francis (Ngannou) can be made outside of the UFC, that’s you giving someone power.
“You can’t let him go,” he continued. “There is no way that he can actually fight anywhere else or be released.”
Francis Ngannou will return on Netflix this May , co-headlining the Ronda Rousey vs Gina Carano event at Inglewood’s Intuit Dome.
With ‘The Predator’ no longer tied to the PFL and Netflix making a huge entrance into MMA, a long-discussed super-fight with Ngannou would likely be awaiting Jones if he were to escape his UFC contract.
