The world of mixed martial arts continues to evolve with each event, as fighters constantly adjust strategies and set their sights on future matchups. Every win and loss not only impacts rankings but also shapes potential challenges that lie ahead. Deiveson Figueiredo recently revealed that he has found bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili‘s weakness after his UFC Rio win.

Figueiredo recently defeated Montel Jackson via split decision at the UFC Rio event. The fight put an end to his victory drought as he lost his last two bouts to Cory Sandhagen and Petr Yan. However, Figueiredo was once a dominant champion at flyweight but moved up to the bantamweight division to find new opportunities and fight at a more comfortable weight.

‘Figgy’ defeated Rob Font in his bantamweight debut. He then went on to put on impressive performances against the likes of Cody Garbrandt and Marlon Vera. Coming back to UFC Rio, Figueiredo was congratulated by Dvalishvili after the event. However, the bantamweight champion also called out the Brazilian as his next challenger, to which Figueiredo replied in the post-fight presser.

It’s nothing new for Merab to speak his mind. I can submit him. I have to train a lot because he is a guy who’s totally different. He is very good, and that’s why he is beating everyone in the division easily. I want to be prepared for him. I just see one detail he doesn’t do with excellency. He takes them, and he doesn’t know how to submit.

Dvalishvili, on the other hand, has put on performances that have edged him closer to the GOAT conversation. After winning the title against Sean O’Malley at UFC 306 in 2024, the ‘Machine’ continued his rampage by defending his title three times in 2025. He has defeated Umar Nurmagomedov and O’Malley in a rematch, while his most recent win came against Cory Sandhagen at UFC 320.

Before moving up in weight, Figueiredo enjoyed a dominant run at flyweight, where he captured and defended the title in one of the division’s most intense rivalries against Brandon Moreno. Known for his explosive power, he became one of the most entertaining champions in the 125-pound class. Across multiple title fights, Figueiredo showcased both submission skills and endurance.

The bantamweight division remains one of the most competitive landscapes in the UFC, with established names still in close contention. A potential bout between Merab Dvalishvili and Deiveson Figueiredo would carry significant implications, testing whether the former flyweight champion’s power and experience can overcome the relentless style of the reigning bantamweight king.

Deiveson Figueiredo wants to jump the line to fight Merab Dvalishvili for the title

Deiveson Figueiredo added another vital win to his resume at UFC Rio, where he defeated Montel Jackson via split decision in the co-main event. Competing in his sixth bout since moving up to bantamweight, the former flyweight champion showcased a tactical performance. His victory extended his momentum in the division. It reinforced his ability to compete effectively against larger opponents.

By neutralizing Jackson’s reach advantage and controlling key moments on the ground, Figueiredo demonstrated the kind of composure and fight IQ that once defined his championship reign at flyweight. The result positioned him closer to a potential title opportunity against current champion Merab Dvalishvili, strengthening his case to enter the conversation among the top contenders at 135 pounds.

Merab is a guy who has fought with everyone in the (division), almost everyone, and won. Looking at the line over there, I’m the only one he hasn’t fought yet, and what took me out of that title fight with him were the two defeats I have suffered. Now I’m back, I’m ready to win. God willing.

With the bantamweight division currently featuring a deep field of elite talent, Figueiredo’s success in Rio adds further intrigue to the title landscape. As the UFC continues to assess future matchups, Figueiredo’s performance in Rio may serve as the breakthrough he needed to establish himself as a serious future challenger for Merab Dvalishvili.
