UFC all-time knockout leader Derrick Lewis turned into a worldwide sensation with four words after a legendary finish.
Derrick Lewis returns to the Octagon this Saturday against Tallison Teixeira in the UFC Nashville main event. The UFC fan favorite will look to keep his strong momentum as Lewis returns following a knockout over Rodrigo Nascimento last year in St. Louis.
Lewis is one of the biggest UFC stars; known for his one-punch knockout power and hilarious moments on the mic. His interviews with UFC commentator Joe Rogan often feature at least one viral moment.
While Lewis was solely known as a dangerous knockout artist earlier in his career, he didn’t have nearly the star power he does today. That all changed on the undercard of Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor at UFC 229.
Lewis and Alexander Volkov helped kick off the action at UFC 229 in Las Vegas in a pivotal heavyweight matchup. Lewis and Volkov had talked trash for weeks leading up to the event, culminating in a near melee during the UFC 229 ceremonial weigh-in.
When the two heavyweights entered the Octagon to settle their feud, Volkov appeared on a one-way path to a victory over Lewis. He dominated the first two rounds of the fight, utilizing a diverse attack to frustrate and slow down Lewis’s arsenal.
With just over a minute left in the fight, Volkov poured on the pressure by landing several nasty body kicks to Lewis’s mid-section. But Lewis went for broke in the final seconds with a huge blitz, and it paid off in a big way.
As you can see in the clip below, Lewis knocked Volkov out cold with a massive right hand that sent the T-Mobile Arena crowd into a frenzy.
Lewis laid on the canvas after doing his trademark ‘Black Beast’ post-fight celebration, as he was visibly exhausted from taking some of Volkov’s biggest shots. But Lewis quickly regained his wits and returned to his feet, before inexplicably taking off his shorts and wearing just his underwear as the official result was read by Bruce Buffer.
Just seconds later, Lewis and Rogan would have one of the UFC’s most iconic post-fight interviews. Rogan asked Lewis why he took his pants off, and his long answer provided comedy gold.
“My balls was hot!” Lewis exclaimed. “I told them boys, I got nothing but heart. They keep on underestimating me, s—, I ain’t all that technical and all that, s— I’m getting there. F— it…
“I forgot, a few hours before the fight, Donald Trump called me and told me I got to knock this Russian m——– out because they making him look bad on the news. Him and Putin and s—, you know, f— what they talking about, USA in this h–, f—…
“I need to sit my black a– down and do some more cardio. F— what you talking about right now.”
Lewis’s post-fight interview kicked off a legendary meme that is still used today. The come-from-behind victory earned Lewis a heavyweight title shot against Daniel Cormier at UFC 230, although he would fall short by second-round submission.
Lewis, an avid supporter of President Trump, could potentially feature on Trump’s proposed UFC event at The White House next year. Trump made headlines when he publicly pleaded with UFC CEO Dana White to host an event at the historical monument.
The announcement drew the attention of Jon Jones, McGregor, and other top UFC stars, and White seemed open to the idea of hosting an event at The White House. But the UFC shared a vague response to Trump’s remarks, assuring fans that more details will be revealed in the coming weeks.
If UFC White House comes to fruition, don’t be surprised if Lewis is featured on the card. In the meantime, Lewis will look to get back into the heavyweight title mix this weekend at UFC Nashville.
