In the UFC, fighters often make predictions and then follow through. From Conor McGregor to Ilia Topuria, fans have seen it many times. Dustin Poirier knew the iconic flying knee was coming, and it still landed. He revealed that Jorge Masvidal told people before their fight at UFC 244 that he would open with a flying knee.
As per Poirier, his own coach, Mike Brown at American Top Team, had shown him videos of Masvidal drilling the exact technique. ‘The Diamond’ was concerned enough about it that he texted a friend before the fight and said, Masvidal is going to start with a flying knee. Five seconds later, the record books changed forever as Masvidal ko’ed Askren.
“Jorge was telling me, ‘I’mma start this fight off with a flying knee.’ Mike Brown [ATT coach] has shown me videos of him doing that. I texted one of my boys, I said, Hey, he’s gonna start with a flying knee,” Poirier said.

The five-second TKO against Askren that produced the fastest finish in UFC history has been dissected from every technical angle since the night it happened. Knowing now that ‘Gamebred’ was calling his shot beforehand adds a layer that pure highlight reel analysis never captured. Meanwhile, the former BMF titleholder now predicted another big claim about Kevin Vallejos.
Masvidal already called Vallejos a future champion after the Josh Emmett demolition, but apparently, that was not the full extent of what he saw coming. Vallejos has 18 wins and one loss. He is coming off a first-round statement win over a proven veteran. A former BMF champion is now making bold predictions about how far he can go.
“That dude is the truth… I haven’t been excited about someone like this in a minute. He made it look like Emmett brought fists and he brought a gun. If he doesn’t become champ, I don’t know s--- about the sport,” Masvidal said (video here; warning: viewer discretion advised).
Now, Masvidal has made another prediction about Vallejos. It builds on his earlier one and suggests that what he saw in that first-round knockout convinced him the ceiling is higher than just one divisional title.
