Dustin Poirier may still look to scratch his competitive itch after hanging up the MMA gloves at UFC 318.

After nearly two decades as a professional mixed martial artist, Poirier will throw down inside the cage one last time on Saturday, July 19.

Making the walk in front of his fellow Louisianans in New Orleans, Poirier will retire at UFC 318 as he brings his career to a close by challenging for Max Holloway’s BMF title.

MMA retirements are often somewhat untrustworthy, but Poirier has been firm in stating that his time in the Octagon is up for good. But ‘The Diamond’ is not closing every combat sports door after UFC 318.

Dustin Poirier could be open to grappling matches after UFC 318 retirement

During a recent interview with Chisanga Malata, Poirier further detailed the reason behind his retirement and explained why, unlike many in the sport of MMA, his decision to hang up the gloves will be final.

‘The Diamond’ did, however, provide some positive news for fans not ready to see him stop competing. Though the more violent sports will be out of the equation after July 19, the former interim lightweight champion is open to exploring one competitive possibility.

And plenty of ‘gillys’ could be jumped…

“I am still gonna be in the gym, so we’ll see about grappling,” Poirier said.

“If something fun came along, maybe I would do a grappling match or something like that in the future.

“But combat sports, I’m gonna protect my brain and try to age as healthy as I can after fighting,” Poirier added.

Dustin Poirier shuts the door on another sport post-retirement

While fans could still get their Poirier fill in the grappling realm following his MMA retirement this Saturday, it seems there’s little to no chance of seeing him in a different sport.

During a recent appearance on The Danza Project podcast, Poirier shut down talk of fighting Jake Paul when asked whether a post-UFC career in the crossover boxing realm is a possibility.

“I don’t know,” Poirier said when asked if he would box Paul.

“You know, respect to everything he’s built. He is really out there training hard, fighting hard, going against the grain and doing it his way. I respect the business part of what he’s doing, and the fighting part.

“But I’ve been around Jake a couple times, he’s a lot bigger than me, by a good bit,” Poirier added. “When I retire, I wanna retire. I don’t wanna come back for a sideshow payday-type of fight. So I don’t think so, man.”
