Eddie Hall’s iconic deadlift record has been officially surpassed – and it happened at the hands of a familiar foe.
Hall, who won the ‘World’s Strongest Man’ title in 2017, lost to Bjornsson when they met in the boxing ring back in March 2022. Since then, their paths have diverged but remained closely linked.
Now three years on, the Briton has transitioned into MMA while his old rival has returned to strongman competitions. And over the weekend, it was Bjornsson who made headlines again.
The Mountain set a new world record by lifting 505kg (1113.3lbs) during an event held in Germany.
Hall first set the world record back in 2016 when he lifted 500kg (1102.3lbs) at the World Deadlift Championships.
Four years later, Thor surpassed him with a 501kg (1104.5lbs) lift, though that attempt faced scepticism as it was performed outside of official competition in a private gym.
This time, there were no questions around the legitimacy of Thor’s lift. The Icelandic strongman did it at the Eisenhart Black Competition – an elite, invite-only strength event held every July in Bavaria.
Hall took to social media to show respect for his old rival after learning that his world record had officially been broken.
The former strongman put their history aside and sent a message to Bjornsson on Sunday morning.
“Massive respect to Thor for making history & setting the official WR at 505kg,” Hall wrote on Instagram.
“That’s one hell of a pull. Records are made to be broken.
“Big respect, Big Love.”
Back in April, Eddie Hall took just 30 seconds to stop five-time ‘World’s Strongest Man’ Mariusz Pudzianowski by knockout.
Since then, there’s been plenty of speculation about a possible super fight between the Englishman and former UFC champion Francis Ngannou.
Hall has also mentioned Conor McGregor, Brock Lesnar, and Dillon Danis as other names he’d be interested in facing down the line.
However, before any of those fights can happen, Hall still has business to settle with Pudzianowski and KSW, the promotion behind their first meeting.
Hall has confirmed he’s already signed on for his next fight, which is expected to take place later this year.
“There is a two-fight deal [with KSW]. The second fight is meant to be a rematch with Mariusz Pudzianowski. Potentially in November.”
Pudzianowski is now 48 years old and coming off consecutive knockout losses. It remains to be seen if he’ll accept the rematch or choose to retire instead.
