Gilbert Burns walked away from the Octagon for the final time Saturday night on his own terms. Following a TKO loss to Mike Malott in the main event of UFC Fight Night 273 at Canada Life Centre, Burns removed his gloves and left them in the cage, signaling the end of a 14-year MMA career.

While the moment came as a surprise to fans, Burns revealed afterward that retirement was already on his mind heading into the bout. The fight itself served as the final test. “If I cannot beat Mike Malott, that’s it,” Burns said. “If we win, we keep going… but if I cannot beat him, that’s it.” Despite his respect for Malott, Burns was candid in his self-assessment measuring himself against the elite standard he had chased throughout his career.

A Career Defined by Elite Competition

Known as “Durinho,” Burns (22-10 MMA, 15-10 UFC) built his legacy by consistently facing the best the welterweight division had to offer.

  • Title challenger
  • Battles against top contenders
  • A resume filled with high-level competition

Though he fell short of capturing UFC gold, Burns leaves behind a career marked by toughness, skill, and willingness to take on any opponent.

In the fight, Burns quickly recognized the difference. “When I felt he’s a little faster, stronger… I was like, ‘OK,’” Burns said. That realization ultimately confirmed what he had already decided his time had come.

Despite not achieving his ultimate goal, Burns leaves the sport with peace of mind. “No regrets,” he said. “I learned so much through the losses… it was a great journey.” For Burns, the setbacks were just as meaningful as the victories shaping both his career and his perspective.

A Legacy of Respect

Few fighters exit the sport with both honesty and acceptance. Burns does. He didn’t chase one last payday. He didn’t linger past his moment.
He made the call when it mattered most. And in doing so, he leaves behind a legacy built not just on wins but on integrity, growth, and respect for the sport.
