Anthony Hernandez has built up a reputation of being a tough fighter in the UFC, but his recent loss via decision to Gregory Rodrigues at UFC Sacramento ended up showing legitimate questions for him at the Middleweight Division.
Rodrigues defeated Hernandez after five rounds, where his physical strength was noticeable and the extra damage he put on Hernandez’s leg prevented him from being able to pressure at his usual rate. With this being the result, it is clear there are factors holding Hernandez back in the Middleweight Division.
Hernandez’s success is typically built around overwhelming opponents as he wants to demand the pace, initiate clinch exchanges, and secure takedowns to make fights uncomfortable.
It became clear that when Hernandez fights an opponent like Rodrigues, who is strong enough to survive those exchanges without becoming exhausted, Hernandez loses his advantage. As he continues to work his way up the Middleweight Division, this will only continue to be a factor.
While Hernandez has shown his style can succeed with his conditioning, chain wrestling, and pressure, he will also need to adapt a bit if he wants to beat the elite fighters in the division going forward.
