Former Olympic gold medalist Kayla Harrison Harrison (19-1) made short work of UFC Bantamweight champion Juliana Pena as she made her tap out at the end of the 2nd round at the co-main event of UFC 316 in Newark, New Jersey.

Harrison controlled every aspect of the fight, there was no time when Pena had any type of advantage in the fight. Another thing that was apparent was the size difference. Harrison was noticeably bigger than Pena and she forced her size on her any chance she could.

“This is for anyone who has ever felt hopeless and wanted to quit,” Harrison said. “On Thursday, I wanted to quit, but there’s a small voice that will tell you not to quit.”

There was a ton of animosity between the two leading up to the fight in their pre fight conferences. Both fighters embraced each other in the ring after the fight.

“We prayed for each other,” Harrison said. “It’s not personal. We’re here to fight. This is a business and I’m grateful to Peña for bringing out a better version of me.”

Moving up in weight?

Harrison winning the UFC championship makes her the second Olympic gold medalist to hold a belt in the UFC. With her clear issues on making the weight at 135, does she continue to hold the title there or does she indeed go up in weight is the question. Based off of her cleaning out the division there really isn’t anything there to challenge her at this point. Moving up in weight will be more beneficial for her physically to the point where she wont be so drained from cutting weight.
