Before becoming the UFC women's bantamweight champion, Holly Holm was a world class boxer. She was multiple-time world champion. "The Preacher's Daughter" returned to the ring on the Jake Paul vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fight card on Saturday against Mexican standout Yolanda Vega.
From 2002 until 2013, Holm was a multiple-time world champion in boxing. She defended her titles 18 times in three weight classes.
Vega entered the fight undefeated (10-0). She last fought in March defeating Fernanda Herrera via unanimous decision.
Holm stayed on the outside in the opening frame. She worked to establish her jab while Vega looked to counter with combinations. Holm managed the distance and won the round on MMAWeekly's scorecard.
Holm came out more aggressive in the second round putting together combinations. Vega pressured Holm and continuously moved forward. Holm's left hand began finding a home. Vega began targeting the body. MMAWeekly scored the round 10-9 for Holm.
Holm kept Vega on the outside with her jab. Vegas was more active in the third landing more often but Holm set the pace. Holm continued to manage the distance well and land with her jab. MMAWeekly scored the round 10-9 for Holm.
Vega pressed forward in the fourth. Holm continued to land her jab. After landing her jab, Holm would step off to the side and fire her left hand. Through four rounds, MMAWeekly had Holm pitching a shutout.
Holm used her footwork to create openings and score points. She put together combinations while being light on her feet. Vega had difficulty boxing Holm in. MMAWeekly scored the fifth frame for Holm.
Holm moved in and out of the pocket behind her jab. Her left hand landed and she began to outclass Vega. She had a higher output and landed more often. Heading into the seventh, Holm was in total control of the fight.
Holm pawed with her jab to set up a straight lefts. When Vega tried to counter, Holm was out of range. Holm began setting down on her punches more and connecting with power shots.
Holm landed left hands, right hands and combinations. Her left hand continued to land. Vega didn't have an answer for Holm's attacks. Holm was first in the exchanges. MMAWeekly scored the round 10-9 for Holm.
Holm remained hard to hit in the ninth. She kept her head off the center line and made Vega miss. Vega continued to get hit with straight left hands.
They touched gloves before the final frame. Holm went back to landing her jab and connecting with straight left hands. Holm's experience showed. Holm would fire off a 1-2 and either rotate away or clinch. Holm looked impressive in her boxing return.
The judges scored the fight for Holm via unanimous decision. All three judges' scorecards read 100-90 for Holm. It was Holm's 33rd boxing win.
