Ilia Topuria told what he needs to become UFC’s greatest of all time by top rival

Ilia Topuria has been told that he is far from solidifying his UFC legacy, despite winning world titles at two different weights.

The Georgian star has emerged as one of the biggest stars of today’s era, racing to gold at featherweight and lightweight. But his victories have been questioned, particularly his crowning moments in both divisions.

He has managed to avoid the likes of Islam Makhachev, Arman Tsarukyan and Movsar Evloev in what some feel is a tainted run to gold. Now, Tsarukyan has detailed exactly what he must do in order to truly declare himself the greatest of all time.

Ilia Topuria must defeat these top stars to cement his legacy

One major critique on Ilia Topuria’s lightning quick run to the top has been his opponents in world title matches. He claimed featherweight gold from the legendary Alexander Volkanovski, but only after he had just been knocked out months earlier in his pursuit of the lightweight belt.

Topuria then defended his title by becoming the first man to knock out Max Holloway, who is already a multiple-time champion and is far past his prime. He then moved up to lightweight, avoiding his younger challengers, to pursue a second belt.

However, it wasn’t Makhachev whom he fought for that gold. The Russian moved up to go for his own second title, and with Arman Tsarukyan in the promotional doghouse after pulling out of UFC 311, he ended up facing the aging former champion Charles Oliveira.

“Yes, I think he hasn’t fought anyone who’s truly on form right now,” Tsarukyan told Чемпионат. “He needs to fight someone like me or Islam, someone who can wrestle, who’s active and at their peak.

“He fought Volkanovski, who’d already been knocked out, been through so much. Holloway? He’s basically just fighting for the money… I think if he gets past me and Islam, then he’ll be truly one of the best fighters of all time.”
