Sean Strickland has been handed an indefinite suspension, which will delay any plans for a rematch with Israel Adesanya.

When Adesanya lost his middleweight title to Strickland at UFC 293 in 2023, there was always a sense that the two would meet again, given the way the fight played out.

Earlier this year, the Nigerian star called for a rematch. Both were coming off defeats, and Strickland hadn’t fought since losing his belt to Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 312. The timing seemed right for both fighters.

Strickland never responded to Adesanya’s challenge, and now things have taken a turn for the worse on his end.

Strickland receives indefinite suspension as Adesanya says he doesn’t want the fight

Strickland was back in the headlines recently after storming the cage at a small MMA event and punching a fighter who had just submitted his teammate.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission has opted to keep ‘Tarzan’ sidelined for now. In a unanimous decision on Wednesday, officials agreed to extend the former champion’s suspension, originally handed down on July 3.

Strickland will remain out of action at least until the commission’s next monthly meeting in August, when a full disciplinary hearing or potential settlement is expected to be addressed.

The UFC can’t schedule anything for him until there is more clarity on how long he will be out.

This leaves Adesanya in limbo, unsure if he’ll get another shot at Strickland this year. He also suggested that Strickland might not be interested in facing him again anyway.

“I’ve called this dude out how many times but now he wants to fight Belal (Muhammad) but why, I don’t understand. He’s never said anything but again, it’s easy money come on, you beat me once, do it again, come on, it’s easy money, you’ll be fine,” Adesanya said in a video on his YouTube channel.

“I just want the fight anyway I think it’ll be a good fight. I want that fight, it’s a big fight for him and I just want that fight again just for me because look (Alex) Pereira beat me how many times and I accepted it… I just want to make sure I did this right just one more time,” he continued.

No other fights make sense for Israel Adesanya

No other matchups seem to fit where ‘The Last Stylebender’ is right now, especially after losing three straight fights, including his recent loss to Nassourdine Imavov.

A win over Strickland probably won’t put him back into title contention at this stage of his career. But even so, beating someone like Sean could still open up new opportunities down the line.
