There has been growing criticism of Joe Rogan and Daniel Cormier’s work behind the mic, with more and more fans questioning their commentary in recent months.
The UFC PPV broadcast team has featured Jon Anik, Joe Rogan, and Daniel Cormier for several years now, though Rogan has stepped back a bit from regular duties.
The New Jersey native missed his first UFC PPV event in several years when the organisation returned to Louisiana for Dustin Poirier’s retirement fight at UFC 318.
With Rogan and DC’s comments under scrutiny, UFC welterweight champion Jack Della Maddalena has even called for a ‘Cormier mute button’ on UFC broadcasts.
When he first joined the promotion, Rogan was highly regarded for the insight he brought to the broadcasts, particularly his knowledge of the sport.
But over time, fans have started to question how much value he actually adds to the commentary team.
During a recent podcast appearance, Rogan explained that he found himself explaining something to Cormier during UFC 319.
“I don’t know s— about judo, I know how to do a few hip tosses, but when someone is doing something I don’t even know what it’s called… In wrestling I have to refer to DC… So even in Martial Arts, I’m not an expert,” Rogan said.
“In jiu-jitsu, it happened in the last fight, on the last UFC card. Daniel Cormier didn’t know about the dead orchard, he thought this fighter was fine because they had two arms in when they were caught in a triangle, I go, ‘No, this is a real submission, this is f—— dangerous.”
Rogan is referencing the ‘Dead Orchard’ submission, which occurred in round two of the fight between Karine Silva and Dione Barbosa, with Silva applying the hold to Barbosa.
Despite a significant portion of the fanbase growing weary of Rogan’s commentary, it is improbable that he will entirely relinquish his duties soon.
After the UFC secured a $7.7 billion broadcast deal, Dana White confirmed Joe Rogan would remain a part of the promotion’s future plans.
