The long saga surrounding Jon Jones has finally come to an end, following Dana White's announcement of his retirement earlier today.
A dilemma hung above Jones' head for several months, with many speculating on what's next for the consensus greatest of all time, and the decision has finally been made. With just one defense of the UFC heavyweight strap under his belt, the 37-year-old has decided to retire, to the disappointment of many.
Jon Jones kept many on edge, as he did not confirm whether he would accept the rumored blockbuster fight against Tom Aspinall, who is now officially the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world.
"Jon Jones called us last night and retired," Dana White confirmed. "Jon Jones is officially retired."
"Tom Aspinall is the heavyweight champion of the UFC."
While some have rejoiced at the newfound clarity in the division, most are upset that one of the biggest fights in the company's history never came to fruition.
As confirmed by Dana White, former interim champion Tom Aspinall has been promoted to the undisputed king of the heavyweights, with a fight announcement likely following in the near future.
Amid the many controversies, Jon Jones has bowed out of the sport as one of the best to ever compete under the mixed martial arts ruleset.
The UFC Hall-of-Famer is among a small group of fighters to have held belts in two separate divisions.
During his time at the top, Jones snagged the record for most wins in UFC title fights history, most successful title defenses in UFC history, most consecutive title defenses in UFC light heavyweight history, and was the youngest ever UFC champion, among many more achievements throughout his renowned career.
No matter what he decides to do next, 'Bones' will always be remembered as one of the greats, all while being one of the most controversial.
