One of the UFC’s greatest rivalries could be continued in a different ruleset.
Jon Jones was very critical of Daniel Cormier after being around his former opponent as coaches on the new season of ALF Reality.
It’s not surprising to see these two men butt heads again, especially considering that they were put against one another in a competitive environment as coaches on the reality series.
Cormier even said that he agreed to box Jones at one point during the filming process following several arguments between the fierce rivals.
A different contest that feels much more realistic for a third clash between them was recently spoken about by a promotion’s co-founder.
Before it was announced that they’d be rival coaches on a reality series, Daniel Cormier said he’d be open to wrestling Jon Jones because he’s still around the sport on a day-to-day basis.
Cormier still has some regrets about his two UFC fights with Jones, with not recording a win over his greatest rival being one of the only things missing from his incredible career.
Their first fight at UFC 182 in 2015 saw ‘Bones’ become the first man to take ‘DC’ down, proving successful with three of his five attempts across the 25-minute bout for the light heavyweight title.
Despite this, the likes of Islam Makhachev believe Cormier could get some revenge in this ruleset due to his long-time teammate being in his element in this ruleset.
The possibility of this happening would’ve been unlikely until Real American Freestyle started putting on events last year with notable names from MMA featuring on their cards.
In a recent interview with MMA Fighting, RAF’s co-founder Chad Bronstein teased the possibility of Jones vs Cormier 3 happening due to the links that the promotion already has to both men via various people they’re associated with.
“Ben’s [Askren] pretty close to Daniel and so is Izzy [Martinez] and then Izzy obviously trained Jon Jones for quite some time. So, so far on RAF, you’ve seen that all matches can happen. So, I’ll leave it at that, that anything’s possible.”
Real American Freestyle have been able to generate additional interest by regularly having former or current MMA stars competing in wrestling matches.
Some of them, including the likes of Arman Tsarukyan and Colby Covington, who feature on RAF 05 that takes place today (January 10), are still under UFC contract.
“The UFC’s been great to us,” Chad Bronstein told MMA Fighting when asked about the relationship between the two promotions. “We’re not competitive… I think we’re additive because we’re giving the ability to their MMA superstars to continue to compete, continue to train, and build their brand. So the UFC’s been great to us, they’ve approved a lot of their fighters to wrestle.”
It might not be easy to make it happen, but it does feel like a trilogy between Jon Jones and Daniel Cormier has the best chance of happening in RAF.
