Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Jon Jones has had a laugh at Tom Aspinall’s expense once again.

Jones turned up at the the DBX4 (Dirty Boxing Championship) weigh-ins in Nashville, Tennessee, by riding on a horse wearing an eye patch. The move was a direct reference to Aspinall’s unfortunate eye injury at UFC 321 against Ciryl Gane, where an accidental eye poke ended the main event bout prematurely, resulting in a no-contest following the first round.

Aspinall received a lot of criticism, with suggestions that he should have continued. While Aspinall said he could not see, it did not stop the crowd from showing their dissatisfaction with boos. Aspinall’s father, Andy Aspinall, has suggested it is serious.

Aspinall’s Camp

“We got an appointment yesterday morning with a friend of ours…basically said ‘It’s bad, it’s not good’. His left eye is still a bit closed, his right eye he still can’t see, it’s just gray. They tested him with some words, and he couldn’t see anything. Went down about four lines and couldn’t see the letters. So one’s really, really gray and the other one’s still not working. His good eye isn’t following light properly, and the muscles weren’t working strong enough to [follow]. So we have to have additional tests this week, and then a CT scan to see if the bones are alright,” Andy said

Jones took it further by mocking Tom, as he rolled up on the white horse, making sure people know his motives behind it.

Jones’ Response

For Jones, the act of riding in on a horse wearing an eye patch is brilliant promotional strategy. Jones has long dealt with accusations from Aspinall that he “ducked” a fight with the British heavyweight. By openly mocking Aspinall’s injury, Jones shifts the focus away from him. The conversation now centers on Aspinall’s perceived lack of toughness.

Furthermore, it keeps Jones in the headlines and generates controversy, which always translates into hype for his next mega-fight. And yet, Jones has a history of accidental eye pokes in the Octagon against opponents like Glover Teixeira and Lyoto Machida. This could alienate casual fans who already dislike his controversial public image and personal history.
