Kayla Harrison is out, and Julianna Pena wants in.
The UFC’s very first event of 2026 and of the Paramount era has taken a major hit just 10 days out.
Harrison has pulled out of UFC 324 after suffering a severe neck injury that required surgery. That news has dealt a blow to Amanda Nunes’ pursuit of a return to the bantamweight throne and looks likely to delay her comeback from retirement.
By all accounts, the promotion plans to postpone the clash of former American Top Team stablemates until the 135-pound champion is ready to return later this year.
But a woman who has history with both Harrison and Nunes inside the Octagon has suggested that she may be willing to keep the ‘Lioness’ on the January 24 card in Las Vegas.
‘The Venezuelan Vixen’ has not competed since having her second title reign ended last June.
Pena was submitted by Harrison at UFC 316, marking her second failed attempt at adding a successful title defense to her résumé.
The first saw the Spokane-born fighter viciously beaten across five rounds by Nunes in their rematch. ‘The Lioness’ got her revenge at UFC 277 seven months after UFC 269, where Pena upset Nunes in shocking fashion to become bantamweight queen.
The first woman to win The Ultimate Fighter believes she has unfinished business with both of her former opponents, and the door may be ajar to settle the score with the Brazilian legend.
Pena reacted to news of Harrison’s UFC 324 pullout on social media by reposting an image of a fight poster for a third fight against Nunes on her Instagram Story.
She later shared another post pitching her trilogy with the ‘Lioness’ as the next step after the champion’s injury.
If Pena’s Instagram re-shares do signal her willingness to step in at UFC 324, she won’t be the only bantamweight contender with her hand raised.
The first to put theirs up was the No. 3-ranked Norma Dumont, who appeared to immediately contact the promotion and put her name forward to fight Nunes on late notice.
There has been no indication thus far that the UFC plans on taking the Brazilian up on her offer, or that Nunes would be willing to have her return from retirement take place for an interim title against a lesser name than Harrison.
