Justin Gaethje admits he’s more dangerous after a loss than a win when reflecting on past setbacks

Justin Gaethje has bounced back several times from big losses as he continues to hunt an undisputed title.

Gaethje blamed his manager for giving the UFC an ultimatum that if they didn’t give him a title shot, he would retire.

While the promotion granted his wish by having him fight for the interim belt earlier this year, Gaethje’s coach knew that this could have been his last bout if it didn’t go his way.

He now has one more shot at becoming an undisputed champion and ‘The Highlight’ has had to learn some valuable lessons to get to this point.

Justin Gaethje reflects on becoming too satisfied after wins ahead of UFC White House card

Justin Gaethje is glad that Max Holloway knocked him out at UFC 300 because it’s made the two wins he’s earned since then so much more impactful.

‘The Highlight’ chooses to keep this result in mind as a reminder to himself that he can’t afford to lose focus when it comes to stepping inside the Octagon.

When speaking about some of the setbacks he’s overcome to remain one of the top lightweights on the roster, Gaethje admitted that becoming too satisfied is something he has to battle.

“Coming off of losses, I’m much more dangerous than I am coming off wins,” he told Grind City Media. “That’s the human mind and it’s just a tricky, tricky situation to be in when you’re being successful, to stay as committed to the process as you need to.”

One way he counters this is by expecting the worst when he competes, as shown by Gaethje saying he was surprised by his success against Paddy Pimblett.

June 14 will be the third time that he has attempted to win the lightweight title and the second time that he’s done so while already holding the interim belt.

The fact that all five of his losses inside the Octagon have come to fighters that have been champions has not escaped Gaethje ahead of his clash with Ilia Topuria.

“I’ve only lost to past champions or in championship fights and obviously, that’s not nice. I don’t like that part about my career.”
