Khabib Nurmagomedov has given Magomed Ankalaev a major vote of confidence ahead of his upcoming title defence.
UFC 320 is set to take place this weekend at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The main event will feature Ankalaev defending his light heavyweight title against Alex Pereira.
The Russian star took the title from ‘Poatan’ at UFC 313, though the Brazilian later said he was only at 40% due to injury issues heading into that fight.
Pereira recently called Ankalaev a ‘coward’ after the two had an awkward run-in at the UFC Performance Institute, ahead of their anticipated rematch.
At 33, Ankalaev is one of two Russian fighters holding UFC titles, the other being Khamzat Chimaev.
Over the past decade, Russia has grown into a powerhouse in combat sports, a rise that former UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov helped to drive.
Khabib is widely seen as the best Russian fighter to ever compete in the UFC. He retired unbeaten, though Joe Rogan did question his record.
Since stepping away from fighting in 2020, Khabib has made his presence felt in coaching, building a strong reputation in that field as well.
Speaking about Ankalaev’s upcoming fight with Pereira, Nurmagomedov did not hold back on his praise. He called Ankalaev one of Russia’s best fighters and said he could climb even higher.
“He is one of the best to ever do it in Russia already. And he keeps improving himself and keeps climbing on top to be the best to ever do it. I really believe he has the skills [to become the best Russian fighter ever].”

Khamzat Chimaev also continues to build his case as one of Russia’s top fighters, steadily adding to an already impressive CV.
Before their first meeting, Ankalaev told fans he would go toe-to-toe with Pereira in the stand-up game, which caught some by surprise given Pereira’s striking pedigree.
But he backed up those words, holding his own in the exchanges and even outclassing ‘Poatan’ at times.
Now, as they prepare to run it back, Ankalaev is promising to deliver something memorable.
“Be ready to witness something special, no excuse, all or nothing,” he posted on X ahead of Saturday’s rematch.
