Khamzat Chimaev looked destined for greatness after a ridiculously one-sided start to his UFC career.

Five years after a record-breaking introduction to life on MMA’s biggest stage, Chimaev finally earned his first title shot in 2024, and the Chechen star’s chance to cash in on that comes in the main event of UFC 319 on Saturday night.

Chimaev will challenge Dricus du Plessis, as the pair collide in one of the most highly anticipated headliners of this year thus far. Their title clash tops a lineup that also includes the likes of Michael ‘Venom’ Page, Carlos Prates, Aaron Pico, and Kai Asakura.

Given Chimaev’s bold plan for a first title defense in Abu Dhabi this October, he’ll no doubt hope for a damage-free night at the office in Chicago to set the stage for a fast turnaround. To succeed in that aim, ‘Borz’ will hope for the kind of dominance he enjoyed to kick off his UFC tenure.

Khamzat Chimaev out-struck his first four UFC opponents 252-2

Chimaev announced his UFC arrival in 2020 by reeling off two victories in the space of just 10 days on ‘Fight Island’. There was no slowing down at the time for the newcomer, as Chimaev knocked Gerald Meerschaert out in just 17 seconds to make it three wins in three months.

While a brutal battle with COVID-19 followed that even left Chimaev contemplating an MMA retirement, he later returned in October 2021 and made a statement with a complete destruction of Li Jingliang at UFC 267.

The result against ‘The Leech’ left Chimaev with a perfect 4-0 promotional record and impressive 10-0 slate in pro MMA. And inside the Octagon, he had barely even been touched.

Combined, the Chechen phenom incredibly outstruck John Phillips, Rhys McKee, Meerschaert, and Jingliang by a margin of 252-2. And when it came to significant strikes, Chimaev had been connected with just once across those four fights, marking some scarily dominant statistics that appear unlikely to be surpassed anytime soon.

Chimaev’s run of ‘hit and don’t get hit’ success came to an end in his fifth fight, when Gilbert Burns landed 141 strikes on ‘Borz’ at UFC 273 in Jacksonville, 119 of which were recorded as significant blows.

Khamzat Chimaev predicts similar dominance against Dricus du Plessis

While nobody has yet cracked the puzzle that is Du Plessis’ unique style in the UFC, Chimaev has been making his usual confident predictions that involve ‘smashing’ his foe.

After Du Plessis and Chimaev’s heated final face-off, the challenger sent an ominous warning to his division’s champion, vowing to leave him “dead” in the Octagon at Chicago’s United Center.

“Just gonna go f— this boy up,” Chimaev told Joe Rogan on stage.

“One day, he has only one day left. He is dead tomorrow.”
