Khamzat Chimaev originally hoped to make a quick turnaround after winning the middleweight title.
The undefeated star’s plan ended up being derailed by an injury that eliminated the chances of him proving people wrong.
Chimaev’s recent comments about fighting one more time at middleweight haven’t eased fans’ concerns about his title reign.
He’s made it very clear that he wants to pursue fighting at light heavyweight, with Chimaev recently calling out Alex Pereira.
His latest update on when people can expect to see him back inside the Octagon suggests that the champion doesn’t think there are too many opponent options.
Jon Jones’ recent comments about Khamzat Chimaev echo how highly rated the middleweight champion is by a lot of his fellow fighters and fans.
While he received some criticism for his title-winning performance in August, his nine consecutive wins inside the Octagon have shown him to be a one-of-a-kind competitor.
However, it was argued before he won the belt that Chimaev being champion could be a ‘disaster’ for the sport due to how often he’s fought in recent years.
It seems obvious at this time that Nassourdine Imavov will be his first challenger, while the upcoming matchup between Sean Strickland and Anthony Hernandez could set up another option.
Despite the names that are there at middleweight who want to face him, Chimaev’s recent response to being asked when his next fight will take place saw him argue the opposite.
“When is my next fight?” Chimaev said in a video from MTGYM23, reposted via Red Corner MMA. “Nobody wants to fight, brother. What should we do?”
Khamzat Chimaev has only faced (and beaten) two of the fighters that make up the middleweight division’s top 15.
While there are plenty of new matchups for him at 185 pounds, this isn’t the issue the current champion is finding himself in.
Regardless of his ambitions to move up a division, only Nassourdine Imavov and Anthony Hernandez are in the middleweight title picture due to impressive winning streaks.
Given how infrequently he competes, it’s clear that Chimaev wants to target the most significant fight available, which goes hand-in-hand with the prospect of his title reign being a short one.
