Justin Gaethje took a massive shot in his first spar in front of his coach.
Throughout his career, ‘The Human Highlight Reel’ has made a reputation for his willingness to go to the trenches.
Gaethje delivered a fantastic fight with Luis Palomino and his battles with Dustin Poirier are the stuff of legend.
And it’s fair to say his coach knew he was destined for violence from the first moment he met him.
Justin Gaethje has never shied away from exchanging blows.
However, he pushes the boundaries even further than most.
During an episode of The Joe Rogan Experience from 2020, Trevor Wittman said: “I met him at one of the fights. It was spectacular.
“I talked to him in his locker room, and he’s like, ‘I’d love to come to your gym’.
“So, he comes down and he’s like, ‘I’m here to fight’, and I’m like, ‘We’re sparring today’, and he says, ‘Ok, cool, I wanna fight’.
“I go ‘Do you have any gear’? He goes, ‘What gear do I need’? I tell him, ‘Get one of those headgears’. He says ‘Why do I have to wear a helmet? Nobody else is wearing a helmet’.
“He’s sparring with this guy named Vinnie Lopez. He gets hit by an uppercut while he’s hitting Vinnie with an overhand’.
“He turns around and I go, ‘Oh s—, he’s hurt’. I go to him and I’m like, ‘Are you good’? He goes, ‘That felt so f—– good’. He’s looking at his fist.
“They both cracked each other so good — KO shots.”
During his appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, Gaethje opened up about his career.
Speaking candidly, the mixed martial artist told many a fascinating tale to the podcaster.
