Leon Edwards ready to reclaim UFC welterweight title

After months of radio silence from the Leon Edwards camp, it now looks like the former champion is ready to reclaim his title.

'Rocky' was riding an incredible 13-fight unbeaten streak before falling short at UFC 304. The Brit made two successful defenses of the welterweight strap, beating division mainstays Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington.

Four months after losing his crown, Leon Edwards is preparing a return. While the 170 lbs division is one of the toughest in the sport, Edwards has set the goal of becoming champion by this time next year.

"My goal right now is to, obviously, get the belt back," Edwards said. "I'd love to be champion again by the end of the year, next year. Around this time next year."

"So, it's just [about] putting steps in place."

Edwards later discussed just how difficult losing for the first time in almost a decade can be.

"I haven't lost a fight in like nine years, so I was getting used to that feeling again."

"I feel like I hate losing more than I love winning. You know, there's not much you can do now. Just move on from that, you put it behind you."

"For me, it's more about what's next and how do you get back to where you want to get to. My goal is to be a two-time world champion."

Belal Muhammad sits atop the welterweight division after delivering a one-sided shutout display against Leon Edwards earlier this year.

Muhammad was scheduled to defend his gold at UFC 310 on December 7, but injury forced him out of the bout.

Instead, Shavkat Rakhmonov will face Ian Garry in what is likely to be a number-one contender clash.

This leaves Leon Edwards in limbo, though there have been rumors of who his return opponent will be. Confirming that he is no longer retired, Jorge Masvidal has called for a fight against Edwards, a man he has much history with.
