Magomed Ankalaev’s unbeaten run came to an end on Saturday night after 14 consecutive wins.
Ankalaev had held the UFC light heavyweight title for six months after taking it off Alex Pereira with a unanimous decision win at UFC 313 in March.
But ‘Poatan’ evened the score in their rematch at UFC 320, stopping Ankalaev with a first-round TKO and making sure everyone noticed with his celebration.
While there is already talk from Ankalaev’s camp about a third fight, given that the series is now tied at one each, the former champion is not rushing into anything just yet, based on his initial comments after the loss.
It was Ankalaev’s first defeat in 15 UFC bouts, but he does not seem too shaken by it.
The Muslim fighter perseveres, convinced that this defeat will ultimately make him stronger.
He posted on Instagram: “If Allah tested me with defeat, it means he wants to strengthen me.
“I bow to his will, but not to difficulties.”
“To those who stayed by my side – thank you.
“Thank you also to those who turned away. After all, Allah clears the path not only of weakness, but also of unnecessary people,” Ankalaev concluded.
The stark difference between their two fights has raised questions about whether a third bout between Pereira and Ankalaev is really needed.
Conor McGregor, the UFC superstar, appeared to hint at another matchup since the series is tied at one apiece.
Pereira was asked before UFC 320 about a possible trilogy with Ankalaev but did not think the Dagestani would make his way back into title contention.
With Carlos Ulberg and Jiri Prochazka both in the mix for the next title shot, Ankalaev might have to take another fight before getting another crack at Pereira.
