Mauricio Ruffy has revealed that he has been discussed as a potential opponent for Conor McGregor at a proposed UFC White House event.
The lightweight prospect has emerged as an unexpected name linked with McGregor’s long-awaited return to the Octagon.
Ruffy has now explained how his name entered the conversation to face McGregor in his first bout in years at the White House.
While speaking to Laerte Viana, Mauricio Ruffy said that Conor McGregor himself raised the idea of a possible matchup between the two fighters.
Explaining the reasoning behind that interest, Ruffy noted McGregor mentioning him as a potential opponent added him to the mix.
“He made comments about me fighting him, saying that two top-level strikers would sell much more, it would be closer to what he’s aiming for in his comeback, not to fight a guy who’s coming off several losses and all that.”
The comments suggest McGregor is focused on stylistic appeal as he weighs up opponents for a high-profile return.
Speaking further, Mauricio Ruffy made it clear that he would not hesitate to accept the opportunity if it became available.
Explaining why he believes the matchup makes sense, Ruffy said that their styles would work well. Ruffy has also previously issued a public call for a major fight.
“He wants to fight a good striker who will drive the crowd crazy. And I said, ‘Wow, I agreed right away.’ I said, 100%, count me in.”
“Hunter [Campbell], Dana White, you see me fight and know my style. How about Conor McGregor or Paddy Pimblett? Let me put on a show.”
With McGregor’s return still unconfirmed, Ruffy’s comments underline his readiness for one of the biggest opportunities of his career.
