Mauricio Ruffy says he’s still with Fighting Nerds despite leaving them out of his UFC 325 corner

Mauricio Ruffy won’t be backed by the Fighting Nerds when he steps back into the octagon in Australia, but he insists he’s still part of the team.

Last year, it felt like everything was clicking for them. The Fighting Nerds were unbeaten and looking like they might go all season without a loss. But then reality hit. In 2025, that unbeaten run fell apart with some pretty rough defeats.

Ruffy took his first UFC loss against Benoit Saint-Denis and is now looking to rebound against Rafael Fiziev at UFC 325. To prepare for the time zone and climate differences, Ruffy has been training in Australia with former featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski.

While he plans to reconnect with his old team down the line, they won’t be in his corner for this fight.

Training with Alexander Volkanovski

Volkanovski has also spoken highly of Ruffy’s development during their sessions together, noting not just his talent but also his willingness to take advice from someone who’s been through similar ups and downs.

“He asked if I wanted help again,” Volkanovski explained. “He did that last time too. He wanted help again because I had come from two losses as well.”

Mauricio Ruffy explains why Fighting Nerds won’t be in his corner at UFC 325

Mauricio Ruffy is making some adjustments following a tough stretch for the Fighting Nerds, a team that saw all its members lose their unbeaten UFC records last year. While he says he hasn’t left the group for good, they won’t be backing him up at UFC 325.

“I’m still on Fighting Nerds but in this fight Flavio [Alvaro] and Pablo [Sucupira] will not be in my corner,” he told Ariel Helwani via a translator on tonight’s episode of his Uncrowned show.

He explained: “One week before Pablo has Jean Silva’s fight, then after the fight he needs to go stay one month with Caio Borralho in Vegas.

“He’s a dad right now, he has a baby so I understand this moment of his life. So I’m here [in Australia], Volk is helping me and I have two corners training with me. I will have one more corner who is training here with Volk and the boys at the gym.”

Despite stepping away from his usual setup, Ruffy believes there’s value in handling this setback on his own.

“The guys will not be in my corner for this fight… I’m grateful to God because it’s good to know how it works on the side of the story when you lose. The media and all of this stuff is only good when you know success.

“Now I know how it works in the bad moment. I keep in my mind that God is with me all the time so I will become better and better.”
