Entering 2025, UFC women's flyweight contender Maycee Barber was riding a six-fight winning streak and looked to be one win away from earning a title shot.
She was lined up in pivotal match in the division against No. 4 ranked Erin Blanchfield and was scheduled to headline the UFC Vegas 107 fight card on May 31 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. When Barber was supposed to make the walk to the octagon, she did not.
The broadcast went to a commercial break. When they returned to the UFC Apex, the broadcasters announced that the main event had be abruptly canceled. Barber had a medical issue and was not cleared to fight as they were lined up to walk out. Barber detailed the incident in interviews days after the fight cancellation.
"There was an event that happened in the back when I was warming up and the doctor, the commissioners, like everybody saw it. And the commissioners were, I guess they were asking me if I was okay, and I was saying that I was, and then they didn't think that I was.
"They kept asking the coaches and the coaches were like - Again, I'm not entirely sure because it's hard for me to remember everything that happened - But from what I was told the coaches were like, 'We're not quite sure.' So they were trying to figure it out and they ended up all going and getting the doctors. Next thing I know I was in the back of the ambulance and being transported to the hospital," she told ESPM MMA in June.
Barber was evaluated by several doctors and underwent a litany of tests. She didn't get all the answers she wanted but hasn't had an issue since being prescribed medication. She's been cleared to fight and is slated to take on No. 9 ranked Karine Silva at UFC 323 on Dec. 6 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
"It has been a wild ride, a rough, what is it, almost 18 months now. I'm finally excited to be able to be back in a (training) camp again and back to having a fight again. I'm just feeling really blessed and really excited," Barber told MMAJunkie.
"The UFC sent me to a neurologist, several doctors actually, and we ended up being send to a neurologist in Boston. Although they didn't have an exact pinpoint answer of, 'Hey, this is exactly what happened. This is why it happened,' and all of that. They had a solution," Barber explained.
"I never thought I'd be a person that would be taking medications, but they put me on medication. That was the solution, and I haven't had any issues since then. My last event that I ever had was I believe like June or July. After all of that I've been completely fine and healthy. Got the clearance from the neurologist, and then was cleared to be abler to continue and train and fight and all of that."
