Conor McGregor is back in training, showing he is dedicated to making a return.
McGregor has said he wants to fight at the UFC White House card in June 2026, which would mark his first fight since losing to Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in 2021. His attempts to make a return against Michael Chandler at UFC 303 failed due to a broken toe. Since then, McGregor has reentered the testing pool and began training. Conor’s form is not the best, having lost three from his last four. His only win during this period took place in 2019 when he defeated Donald Cerrone at UFC 246. Conor’s longtime coach, John Kavanagh, confirmed that the Irishman’s comeback plans are serious.
“Us, on on our end, we’re 100% in. He’s asked me to basically lay out a program between now and June of how we’ll ramp up our training. He’s showing up again. He’s back in the gym most mornings, early. And he’s just having fun with it. I got a bunch of messages after [UFC 322] on Saturday night. He wants to fight everybody. But certainly, he wants to get on that [White House] card.
“How it works from a management point of view, I don’t really get involved in that. But from a training point of view, he’s already tasked me with putting together a team of suitable training partners. We’ll do some of it in the gym, some of it in his house. So he’s fully locked in that we’re gonna be making the walk in six, seven months. If it’s Conor’s choice, he’s in. I don’t know how it’ll work with the UFC. I don’t know,” Kavanagh said
Despite his desire to return, will he be the same fighter? McGregor has been seen regularly drinking and partying during his time away from the sport. There has been a perception that this has been due to his struggles in dealing with the Khabib Nurmagomedov loss. McGregor never got the chance to get a rematch, as Khabib retired. Meanwhile, he also failed to back up his trash talk, resulting in a one-sided submission loss. Islam Makhachev, who is now coached by Khabib, does not see Conor making a return.
“This guy is not coming back. He’s never going to fight anymore. I told this like two years ago, and I still think he’s not going to fight. And now he has disqualification from the anti-doping commission, I heard, and that’s why I think no. Maybe Jon Jones will come back to fight at the White House, but no Conor,” Makhachev stated
