Following Conor McGregor’s withdrawal from the Irish presidential race, his former training partner, Artem Lobov, says the Irishman was not in the right frame of mind to run for President.
McGregor’s political ambitions, which were centered on an anti-immigration platform and had even gained support from Elon Musk, came to a halt when he failed to secure the required nominations to get his name on the ballot. McGregor had announced he was leaving the campaign to focus on his family.
Following careful reflection, and after consulting with my family, I am withdrawing my candidacy from this presidential race. This was not an easy decision, but it is the right one at this moment in time. While I will not contest this election, my commitment to Ireland does not end here.
“I will continue to serve my people by using my international platform to promote Irish interests abroad, to strengthen our economic opportunities, and to advocate for transparency and responsibility in public life at home. This campaign has sparked an important conversation about democracy in Ireland about who gets to stand, who gets to choose, and how we can ensure that the presidency truly belongs to the people. That conversation will not end with my withdrawal,” McGregor stated
While others have responded to the news with mockery, such as Jorge Masvidal, Lobov’s comments were more respectful. McGregor is expected to shift his focus entirely back to the UFC, having declared his wish to fight at the upcoming UFC White House event next June. Lobov feels McGregor made the right decision.
“This time around, I support the decision to withdraw because I don’t think Conor is in the right space right now. Not in the right mindset to run for president. He has to get his ducks in a row first. We saw he pulled out of a press conference. That’s not Conor. I know Conor that showed up to fight for the interim belt with no legs.
Both of his ligaments were torn in both of the knees, he was completely unable to walk and still showed up. That’s the Conor I know. That’s the Conor that people believe would make a good president. I agree. That Conor for sure would make a great president and would address all the issues that need to be addressed right now in Ireland,” McGregor said
