Tom Aspinall’s first undisputed title defence ended in a no contest at UFC 321, and now he is facing criticism for how he handled fight week.

After waiting 15 months for Jon Jones to return, Aspinall stepped back into the Octagon at UFC 321 to defend his title against Ciryl Gane.

The fight was stopped early after Gane landed an unintentional double eye poke that left the Briton unable to continue. The bout was ruled a no contest, leaving fans without a clear outcome.

Even though Aspinall kept his title, the build-up and result made it a forgettable week overall. An immediate rematch with Gane seems likely.

Michael Bisping calls out Team Aspinall’s handling of UFC 321 fight week

During UFC 321 fight week, there were a few moments where Aspinall faced criticism from both fans and some former fighters.

One incident involved a private conversation with Daniel Cormier being posted to his YouTube channel. ‘DC’ was not pleased, stating that he was ‘upset’ about the release of their private discussion.

Aspinall’s father also made headlines during fight week by expressing in an interview that he hoped his son would switch to boxing after his contract ended, rather than sign a new deal with the UFC.

Now, days after the event, Michael Bisping has weighed in, saying on his podcast that these issues could end up causing problems for the 32-year-old down the line.

“I know he dipped on a few interviews, a few interview obligations so people were grumbling about that.

“Then there was the whole thing with DC… Whispering into the microphone, he didn’t need to release that, so he kind of dropped the ball a little bit there. And then his dad was talking about the boxing thing, like ‘After this contract we’re leaving’.

“I was like, ‘What are you doing?’ you don’t negotiate like that in public, you speak to them man to man, I mean if that’s what you wanna do, great, but if you had of lost on Saturday night, good luck getting another title fight.

“There were a few things that were ruffling a few feathers.”

Is Dana White upset with Tom Aspinall?

Bisping was not alone in suggesting that Aspinall’s actions during fight week might hurt his standing within the organisation.

Many fans believe UFC president Dana White was frustrated with the Englishman for not continuing, based on a remark he made during the post-fight press conference.

If history is any guide, this could signal a shift in how the 32-year-old is treated by the promotion going forward.
