Just when it seemed a fight between Michael Chandler and Conor McGregor was finally taking shape, the story took another unexpected turn last week.
After Donald Trump announced that the UFC would hold an event on the White House lawn on June 14, McGregor quickly expressed interest in fighting on the card.
This was good news for Chandler, who’s been waiting for McGregor to return so they can finally settle their long-standing feud.
But even though he felt closer than ever to getting that fight, Chandler hit another roadblock last week.
With the UFC set to begin its partnership with Paramount, Dana White has been making the rounds in the media to promote upcoming events and outline what fans can expect this year.
And during that, White shut down any talk of a fight between McGregor and Chandler, saying it was only interesting “a couple of years ago.”
Soon after, McGregor hit back at those remarks by posting on social media, telling the UFC to pick whoever they want for his next opponent. He then added that he’ll be ready no matter who they choose.
And not long after that post from the former double champion, talk began swirling about a possible fight between McGregor and Jorge Masvidal. Fuel was added to those rumours when Gamebred said he had big news linked to the UFC’s event at the White House.
The ex-UFC fighter stopped short of confirming whether he’d be stepping in for McGregor’s next opponent but did admit that discussions are underway.
Responding publicly for the first time since being dropped from consideration by Dana White, Chandler posted on X: “How easy is it to get a headline these days: ‘I cannot confirm nor deny’ about ANYTHING. Yeah, I cannot confirm nor deny if I landed on the moon last week.”
Right now, there’s still plenty of doubt over whether the Irishman will even take part in the event, despite things looking promising not long ago.
Recently, the 37-year-old posted photos on social media, giving fans a look at his current shape as he stays in training for what could be a comeback to the sport.
