Nate Diaz requests to be released by UFC

Nate Diaz made his UFC debut 15 years ago, which makes him one of the promotion's most tenured veterans, but he says he isn't interested in sticking around any longer.

Diaz, 36, asked to be released from his UFC contract in a tweet Saturday that cited his inability to get a fight scheduled as the reason for his request. His last fight was a unanimous-decision loss to Leon Edwards at UFC 263 in June 2021.

Earlier in the week, Diaz tweeted about his frustration with the fact that he hasn't been able to schedule a fight.

In January, former UFC interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier said that a fight with Diaz was close to being finalized. That never came to fruition, and Poirier says it's because Diaz retired from competition.

Diaz has a 20-13 record as a professional with a 15-11 record during his time in the UFC. No fighter has received more of the UFC's Fight of the Night bonuses than Diaz. In 2016, he emerged as a star in the sport with a submission win over Conor McGregor, but he has lost three of four fights since.
