Oliveira vs. Fiziev Off Following Fiziev’s Injury

Due to an injury to Rafael Fiziev, the lightweight main event for UFC Rio on October 11 is now off.

Fiziev, who was set to face former lightweight champion Charles Oliveira, will be replaced by another fighter who is yet to be announced. This was to be Oliveira’s first fight since suffering a knockout loss to Ilia Topuria in their lightweight title bout at UFC 317. The UFC is currently seeking a new opponent for Oliveira, and a few names have been thrown out as potential replacements, as we look at who could be next.

Options

One of the options is Mateusz Gamrot. As a top-5 ranked lightweight, Gamrot presents a high-risk, high-reward opportunity for Oliveira. Known for his elite wrestling and relentless pace, Gamrot would be a true test of Oliveira’s improved grappling and submission defense. For example, Gamrot’s ability to control opponents on the ground and his high-level chain wrestling could make him a stylistic nightmare for Oliveira, who, despite his dangerous jiu-jitsu, has struggled with top-tier wrestlers in the past.

Another option is Dan Hooker. Hooker is known for his willingness to stand and trade, making his fights some of the most exciting in the lightweight division. A matchup with Hooker would be a guaranteed thriller. This would give Oliveira a chance to showcase his striking. Hooker’s heart and resilience have been proven in wars against top fighters like Dustin Poirier, and a win over a respected veteran like him would be a crucial step for Oliveira in getting back into title contention.

Finally, a less likely option is Benoît Saint Denis. The French fighter has built a reputation as a powerful striker and grappler, and he recently had an impressive win at UFC Paris. A fight against a former champion like Oliveira would be a massive step up for him and a chance to immediately enter the top-tier of the lightweight division, leaving Oliveira with plenty to consider.
