Paddy Pimblett jumps in the ring after Molly McCann puts on best boxing showing yet in homecoming win

Former UFC star Molly McCann scored a big victory in her biggest fight since making the transition yet in her hometown tonight.

The ex-strawweight contender retired from the octagon last year, before making the switch to Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing. And after their Liverpool event was hit by the cancellation of Callum Smith and David Morrell in the main event, ‘Meatball Molly’ landed a spot in the co-main event.

McCann is a massive favorite with scousers, and drew thousands of fans to what amounted to the most significant outing of her new career to date. And she was supported at ringside by Paddy Pimblett on a massive night in the M&S Bank Arena.

Molly McCann vs Ashleigh Johnson result

In a moment that made the event feel much bigger than the 4,500 in attendance, Molly McCann was played into the ring by Liverpool singer Jamie Webster. Ashleigh Johnson, with a 3-3 record, was greeted by a chorus of boos from the home crowd when she made her walk.

Webster proceeded to play a multiple song set while Johnson attempted to stay warm in the ring, as McCann was embraced by her hometown for the first time since 2018. That night she was submitted by Gillian Robertson, but it was a much different story tonight.

Johnson was game and walked forward in the opening round, but was being caught clean any time she attempted to throw anything of substance of her own. The second was very similar, with one good shot from the underdog snapping McCann’s head back amid an otherwise one-sided onslaught.

Halfway through the fourth, Johnson changed tack as she took on a Southpaw stance, and made it something of a scrap. But McCann couldn’t miss with her counter uppercut that appeared to hurt her rival.

For the first time in a boxing ring, McCann was brought into a seventh and then eighth round by the more experienced Johnson. And as the later rounds began, the Liverpool native appeared to struggle with the pace that both women had set.

Ultimately, they ended up seeing the final bell as McCann rallied to win the final round. And she won the decision on all three scorecards 78-74, with Pimblett getting in the ring to celebrate.
