Paddy Pimblett has been told by one of the greatest lightweights of all time that he will definitely lose to Ilia Topuria when they eventually square off.

Islam Makhachev holds the record for most lightweight title defences in UFC history, only giving up his belt in order to pursue a second title this weekend at UFC 322 in New York City. He will face Jack Della Maddalena for the welterweight belt on Saturday in an effort to make history.

When Makhachev casts his eye on what will soon be his former division, he sees a potential title fight between Topuria and Pimblett. Despite never being a big fan of the Georgian, he expects him to be considerably too much for his British rival.

Islam Makhachev backs Ilia Topuria to beat Paddy Pimblett

Islam Makhachev is one of the best lightweights in history, and until his teammate Belal Muhammad lost his welterweight belt was eyeing a potential matchup with Ilia Topuria. As a result, he knows the new champion well and will have a solid analysis of his abilities.

Speaking with Adin Ross on a recent Kick stream, Makhachev claimed that Paddy Pimblett will have little opportunity to beat who he feels is the far superior Topuria. Instead, he feels Topuria should take on Arman Tsarukyan who is the division’s top contender.

“Arman is the toughest fight for Topuria I think right now, and [Justin] Gaethje also,” Makhachev told Ross. “He’s very good, but for sure not Pimblett… He has small chance, what can he do? A submission, take him down? I don’t know.

“I just think if you ask me ‘who is the hardest fight in the lightweight division for Topuria?’ I say it has to be Arman.”
