Paddy Pimblett believes Carlos Prates has everything needed to become a UFC champion.
The Brazilian welterweight has torn through the division with eight knockouts in nine UFC appearances, his only setback a decision loss to Ian Machado Garry. Prates now appears next in line for a title shot against welterweight champion Islam Makhachev, and Pimblett expects him to eventually wear gold.
Speaking in a recent interview covered by BJPenn.com and Bloody Elbow, the lightweight contender singled out the power Prates brings into the cage. "There's a few fighters where you hear the punches and it sounds like a slap, but it's a thud," Pimblett said. "Carlos Prates is like that. He's a welterweight, not like a big, massive dude. But lad, when he hits people, they know about it."
Pimblett noted the variety of finishes Prates has collected, including spinning back elbows and flying knees, and described him as a nice person outside the cage. The Brazilian's unorthodox smoking habit has added to his appeal among fans, though getting past Makhachev will require more than charisma.
Prates faces one of the most efficient wrestlers the UFC has seen if the Makhachev fight materializes. A decision win over Garry proved Prates can go the distance when needed, but the champion poses challenges few welterweights have solved.
