The MMA fans have reacted to Dustin Poirier’s final bout, which is going to be against Max Holloway on July 19 at UFC 318 in New Orleans.
Poirier is considered one of the most iconic fighters in the history of the UFC. However, he has arguably fallen short at the world level, having missed out on opportunities of winning a title. He suffered defeats in lightweight title fights against Khabib Nurmagomedov, Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev. He also missed out on becoming the BMF Champion after Justin Gaethje had knocked him out. However, Poirier did manage to secure some iconic wins, having beaten a two-weight UFC champion Conor McGregor, on two occasions.
Dustin is coming off a submission defeat against Makhachev, after which he revealed that he wanted one more fight in his hometown of Louisiana before he retired. Porier has been linked with several names, including McGregor, Paddy Pimblett, and Michael Chandler, but it was Holloway who got the nod.
Poirier has defeated Holloway twice at UFC 143 and UFC 236, meaning he will fancy his chances against Max.
However, Max is the current BMF Champion despite having lost his last fight against Ilia Topuria. The Topuria fight had the featherweight title on the line, not the BMF, meaning that Dustin still has the opportunity to go out with a big win. MMA fans have reacted positively to this fight, with many backing Dustin to come out on top in what would be an emotional farewell.
“It’s going to be my final fight. I’m going to lay the gloves down in Louisiana where it all started for me. The whole journey started there, and I’m just honored to have the UFC on the same page and the state of Louisiana on the same page to make all this work. I didn’t know if it was going to all come together, but it did,” Poirier stated
“There is not a better guy I could think to fight in my retirement fight. I was his first fight in the UFC back in 2012, and he’s going to be my last fight in the UFC. So, it’s an honor. He’s a legend, former champion, undisputed, current BMF champion. So, we’re going to put on another war,” Dustin added
