The main-event and co-main-event bouts at UFC Vegas 110 each had implications for fights at the top of both the featherweight and heavyweight divisions, respectively. Here’s who the winners and losers could fight next.
After his impressive TKO win over David Onama, Garcia called out Max Holloway for the BMF belt. That seems unrealistic since Charles Oliveira had already called out Holloway. Both Holloway and Oliveira seem to want to face each other, and both are bigger names than Garcia, making such a fight seem unlikely.
Garcia also called out Josh Emmett in the post-fight news conference.
"I think one fight that makes sense is probably Josh Emmett," Garcia said. "He has a name on him. He has a higher ranking than I do. I think he’s available, so why not?"
This makes way more sense. Emmett is a featherweight, unlike Holloway, and is in the top 10 of the division. After coming off a quick submission loss, a stand-up fight with Garcia makes all the sense in the world from Emmett’s perspective.
Onama is currently the 13th-ranked featherweight. Getting quickly finished by the 12th-ranked featherweight isn’t ideal to get a chance to climb the rankings. Garcia was dominant in the short time the two fought.
The unranked Calvin Kattar could be a great matchup. He’s a solid boxer with tons of experience with high-level fighters. He’s also a name who fans recognize. If you’re fighting unranked opponents, defeating a recognizable name is the next best thing. If Onama can finish Kattar, he could be right back in the mix to move up the rankings.
Cortes-Acosta is an active fighter, which is always a plus in the eyes of UFC matchmakers. Cortes-Acosta said he wanted both a shot for the title against Tom Aspinall and, if not, a fight with Curtis Blaydes.
He did lose his previous fight by decision to the dangerous Sergei Pavlovich, so the idea of an immediate fight for the title against Aspinall seems unrealistic. It would be a good matchup to see Cortes-Acosta go up against Alexander Volkov for the No. 1 contender spot.
If not an immediate shot for a title-eliminator, Cortes-Acosta could fight Blaydes. This would be a strong matchup. Both are well-rounded. Blaydes can challenge Cortes-Acosta on the feet, even though he’s a solid wrestler. Cortes-Acosta can grapple with Blaydes, even though he is a polished striker.
Both Delija and Teixeira are exciting prospects for the lackluster heavyweight division. Both are coming off of knockout losses when they were matched up against opponents in the top 10.
This matchup would give both a chance to prove that they can go against a dangerous fighter with serious one-punch knockout power. A finish for either could immediately get them back on the hype-train.
Teixeira is the 15th-ranked heavyweight, so this matchup would give him a chance to move up the rankings. Delija is currently the ninth- ranked contender, but that will lower once the rankings are updated.
