Ronda Rousey is set for a sensational return to combat sports. While her expertise lies in either the worlds of mixed martial arts or judo, Rousey is rumored to be preparing for a venture into boxing.
Despite the disappointing end to her career inside the octagon, many still consider 'Rowdy' the greatest female to compete under the UFC banner. The Olympic bronze medalist shot herself to superstardom in MMA before transitioning over to the pro wrestling world to further her global fame.
Having sat on the sidelines for two years without fighting or performing, speculation is beginning to build regarding Ronda Rousey's return to competition.
While many believed a comeback could be on the cards for Rousey, nobody expected her to take the boxing route. Not only is the 38-year-old stepping into the squared circle for the first time, but she will also be standing across the ring from one of the best to ever do it.
According to several reports, Ronda Rousey is set to make her boxing debut next year. Opposing her will be a woman considered by many to be the best female boxer of her generation, Katie Taylor.
Ireland's own Katie Taylor has proved her worth over recent years and is now beginning to get the exposure she truly deserves. Before she became one of the greats of professional boxing, Taylor had an outstanding amateur career.
Like Ronda Rousey, the Bray-born brawler is also an Olympic medalist, though she won gold as a boxer in the London 2012 Summer Olympics.
Accompanying her medal, Taylor managed to win five consecutive golds at the Women's World Boxing Championships and a further six golds at the European Championships. These achievements were all achieved before turning pro, but the accolades didn't stop there.
The Irishwoman has held both undisputed lightweight and super-lightweight titles, and played a key role in the success and continuance of live sporting events on Netflix.
Approaching her 40th birthday, Taylor is still raring to perform for the fans.
"I'm not too sure [who's next]; waiting to see what happens," Taylor told BoxingScene regarding her return to the ring. "I'm ready to fight whenever, really, and take on whatever challenge comes next."
"Right now, I'm waiting to see what that is. Any of the big names, any of the big fights. I'm ready to take them all."
Despite Taylor's response, an official reportedly told BoxingScene that talks have begun for a crossover superfight between Katie Taylor and Ronda Rousey.
Rumors suggest that the early signs indicate Netflix's approval, with a date now being targeted for the blockbuster matchup.
Katie Taylor collided with Amanda Serrano in two epic bouts on Netflix, once on the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson undercard and once as a headlining affair on a historic all-women's event.
Those fights seemingly placed Taylor in the streaming services' good books, to the point that Netflix is rumored to be pursuing a main event slot for Taylor once again.
Despite a few of her 12 wins in MMA coming by way of knockout, Ronda Rousey isn't renowned for her striking ability. Her most notable stoppage inside the cage arguably came in the final win of her career in the sport.
At UFC 190, Rousey headlined an event held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Fans waited in anticipation for the women's bantamweight queen to defend her throne against the tough Bethe Correia, which she did in the first 34 seconds of round number one with a vicious striking barrage.
The California native would become too comfortable exchanging strikes on the feet and go on to lose her next two outings by knockout before retiring.
However, recent training footage shows Rousey looking slick as she works the pads with instructor AJ Matthews.
If all goes to plan, the Ronda Rousey vs. Katie Taylor showdown is rumored to unfold in the summer of 2026.
