Preparing for his return to the cage, former UFC bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley has opened up about something that might worry fans.
O’Malley’s next bout is set for January 24, where he will face Song Yadong on the undercard of UFC 324.
His last outing came on June 7, when he lost his rematch against Merab Dvalishvili via third-round submission.
Dvalishvili later lost the title to Petr Yan in a shock result at the end of 2025. That shift seemed to spark something in O’Malley, who said he was motivated to work his way back into contention and earn another shot at Yan.
But just days after making that claim, ‘Suga’ has hinted at an unexpected change in plans regarding his fighting future.
With the title picture now wide open again, a win over Yadong could put O’Malley right back in the mix.
But even with that opportunity ahead, he has hinted that 2026 might be his last year in MMA, regardless of how things play out.
O’Malley stated on his YouTube channel: “Petr knows that’s what’s next.
“I’m gonna go out there and take care of Song, and that’s what’s next. It just makes sense. 2026 is gonna be lit. I’m gonna go out there and take care of Song, take care of Petr, doing well is gonna blow up, and then I’m gonna retire.
“This might be the last Suga year, ever. Go 2-0. It’s almost so pointless to predict what I want to do in the next 2-5 years. I go out there and lose and lose (again), I’m done with this s—.”
Despite the apparent unlikelihood of ‘Suga’ retiring from the sport at the age of 31, he has been a consistent presence in the bantamweight division since 2018 and has already amassed significant achievements.
O’Malley’s achievements go beyond MMA and the UFC. His continued pursuit of opportunities outside the sport makes retirement a distinct possibility, given his success.
And retiring at the pinnacle of his career might be the ideal exit.
