Shara Magomedov drew with Edson Barboza in the pair’s submission grappling match in Rio De Janeiro tonight.

The fan favorite Russian is known for his ‘pirate’ nickname and making it to the UFC as a middleweight despite having just one eye. And as he awaits his next Octagon date, he has been competing under the Hype FC banner in grappling matches.

Back in December, he went the distance with Arman Tsarukyan in a strange bout in Armenia. And after Jorge Masvidal pulled out of a scheduled match tonight in Brazil, he opted to take on Barboza to guarantee he stayed on the card.

Shara Magomedov vs Edson Barboza Hype FC result

In the first of three submission grappling matches to feature UFC stars tonight, Shara Magomedov and Edson Barboza did battle at the Farmasi Arena. The pair competed in a six-minute bout without any breaks after a bizarre night of action in and out of the ring.

Just moments before they made their walks, another match was cancelled and then re-started twice by Valter Walker between Lev Sarkisyan and Joilton Lutterbach. It was the latest in a bizarre series of stunts from the heavyweight, who had just called off a fight and added another during a weird undercard.

Despite the fact that Barboza has fought as low as featherweight, he tipped the scales at a whopping 181lb, just 7lb lighter than middleweight ‘Shara Bullet’. However, as the pair faced off, there was a clear size difference that indicates a pair of fighters multiple weight classes apart.

Magomedov flashed some knees, which are illegal to throw, early while interestingly wearing a brace on his left side. Barboza was the first to shoot for the takedown, but struggled with the much bigger man as they cancelled one another out.

And just on the halfway mark, Magomedov landed a trip and ended up in top position. From there, he worked his way towards a pass. Barboza played guard like a true brown belt against Magomedov, who was competing in beginner events as recently as 2023 and is officially listed as a white belt.

With 20 seconds to go, Magomedov opted to let Barboza up to the feet, before taking him down again to finish the match. Valter Walker attempted to flex his power once more by asking the pair to do another round of just one minute, but Barboza instead told his opponent to give him a rematch at a later date.

The match was ultimately called a draw, with Barboza opting to raise his opponent’s hand seemingly acknowledging that he had been beaten.
