Steve Garcia vs. David Onama Breakdown
Rich Storry-Imagn Images

UFC Vegas 110 takes place on  November 1 headlined by Steve Garcia vs. David Onama, as we look at how both fighters will approach the bout.

Garcia has won six fights in a row, five of which were by stoppages. His only non-stoppage win during this period was against Calvin Kattar at UFC Nashville in his last fight in July. In contrast, Onama is fairly new to the featherweight division. Most of his fights have taken place at lightweight. However, he moved up for his last fight against Giga Chikadze in April where he secured a unanimous decision victory.

The Approach

Garcia is a known knockout artist who is likely to press the action from the opening bell. Tactically, he will use his southpaw stance and 75-inch reach to manage distance before lunging in with heavy combinations, particularly aiming his power left hand. Garcia will likely look to invest early in damaging shots to deplete Onama’s gas tank and put him on the back foot. However, he must be mindful that his relentless pressure leaves him vulnerable to counters.

David Onama, fighting out of the orthodox stance with a 74-inch reach, is a high-pressure fighter who often walks opponents down, generating a high pace that can break less durable opponents. His key will be to avoid the initial, fight-ending power shots from Garcia and force the fight into the deeper rounds. When he faced Chikadze, Onama relied on pushing forward, landing with high volume, and mixing in takedown attempts. Ahough his grappling is less reliable than Garcia’s defense, he may use it to break Garcia’s rhythm or wear him out against the cage.
