The super fight between Islam Makhachev and Jack Della Maddalena is eagerly awaited by fans. Both fighters have frequently expressed their desire to fight each other and have called out one another on social media. However, Makhachev’s manager, Ali Abdelaziz, who has been part of Khabib Nurmagomedov’s team, recently made a massive development regarding the matchup.
The MMA executive was seen talking to Submission Radio regarding a variety of topics, including the factors influencing the Superfight. Even though Abdelaziz believed that the fight was confirmed, he revealed that he wanted to respect the UFC and let them make the proper announcements with details and briefs.
The fight is done, but I am always respectful to the promotion. It’s their job; they didn’t announce the fight. But I know this by end of the year, Australia is gonna have no champion. Maddalena is gonna be a very tough fight for Islam, but I believe Islam has all the tools to compete with him, but, in reality, its a fight anything can happen.

Makhachev was the reigning lightweight champion and relinquished his title to pursue double-champ status at welterweight. However, Maddalena immediately accepted the challenge and showed interest in fighting the Dagestani star. The Australian champion quickly climbed up the rankings and put on a dominant performance against Belal Muhammad at UFC 315 coming in on short notice.
However, Makhachev had been chasing double champ status for a long time. He was unable to move up to welterweight initially due to his training partner and friend Muhammad holding the belt. Nevertheless, Maddalena’s victory at UFC 315 paved the way for Makhachev’s ambition. However, there have been concerns regarding what a loss could mean for the Dagestani-born fighter.
The fight against JDM is not the only concern for Makhachev, as the former champion plans to return to his division and eyes a second superfight against lightweight champion Ilia Topuria. The Georgian-Spanish fighter moved up in hopes of fighting Makhachev for the belt. However, he won the vacant lightweight championship after knocking out Charles Oliveira at UFC 317.
Makhachev is aiming for greatness and is following the footsteps of his mentor, Khabib Nurmagomedov. However, his ambition may prove risky if he fails to stop Maddalena in their much-awaited bout. It remains to be seen when the UFC announces the highly expected bout at 170 pounds.
Islam Makhachev has undoubtedly positioned himself as one of the greats of the lightweight division. With wins over former champions and a cemented spot at the top of the pound-for-pound list, Makhachev had achieved success later in his UFC career. However, a fight against Maddalena puts the Dagestani native’s legacy at risk. Khabib Nurmagomedov recently spoke about the potential fight.
The lightweight legend was seen speaking with Russian reporter Adam Zubayraev about how he would train Makhachev for the fight against the welterweight kingpin. However, Nurmagomedov acknowledged Maddalena’s fighting prowess and snubbed off any other fighters that Makhachev had faced in the past. He also compared JDM to Ilia Topuria as an opponent for his protege.
I think Maddalena is the toughest opponent in Islam’s career. None of those other fighters. Maddalena is twice the size of Ilia. Taller, Bigger, stronger legs and a bigger frame, and his boxing is also really good. In grappling, he scrambles really well if you have watched him. If I were preparing Islam for either Ilia or Jack, I’d be more concerned, and I am more concerned about Maddalena.

"I think Jack is the toughest opponent of Islam's career. If I were preparing Islam for either Ilia or Jack, I’d be more concerned — and I am more concerned — about Jack."

By placing Maddalena above names like Charles Oliveira and Ilia Topuria, Nurmagomedov highlighted the unique danger of facing a natural welterweight with refined boxing and resilience in grappling exchanges. His perspective added weight to the growing belief that if Islam does move up in weight, Maddalena could represent the most significant and risky challenge to his dominance.
